Initially trained as a musicologist, Donal is a self-taught guitarist and composer. He has been involved with film, theatre and dance in addition to working as a soloist. He holds a diploma in classical guitar from the RIAM and a masters degree in historical musicology from UCD. His music has been performed by Concorde, National Chamber Choir of Ireland, New Dublin Voices, Atlas Ensemble, Quiet Music Ensemble, Dublin Laptop Orchestra, Rhombus, John Feeley, Nick Roth and others. Hiis educational works have won special and honourable mentions in international competitions and he was the winner of the Seán O’Riada Award in 2014. He is currently working on a set of guitar etudes, and an exploration of folk music with Sue Rynhart. His debut album El Sur, which is an imaginary journey through South American guitar music, is available for free. When not making music, Donal spends his free time jogging, cycling, writing and meditating.
